San Jorge de Tandayapa Lodge & Hummingbird Sanctuary |
San Jorge de Tandayapa Lodge & Hummingbird Sanctuary is located in the Tandayapa Valley near the Nono-Mindo Road, a world-famous site for birding. The lodge itself is a short hike from the access road, sheltered from outside noises, which leaves you free to enjoy birdsongs and rainforest sounds in tranquility.
Stay here either as a stop on your Magic Birding & Hiking Circuit tour, or come and birdwatch on your own!
Natural Areas
The nature reserve is home to 300 species of orchids and 360 species of birds, and falls within the Choco Endemic Bird Area, which BirdLife International has designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Our professional birding and naturalist guides lead hiking tours for all ages and interests throughout the cloud forest, an ecoregion characterized by an abundance of epiphytes and mosses as well as, of course, cloud cover!

Accommodations
In addition to the original 4-room lodge, a new lodge was built in 2008 featuring beautiful design, rooms with balconies, and all modern conveniences. This jungle hideaway offers stunning panoramic views; an excellent trail system throughout the surrounding cloud forest; and a dining area lined with hummingbird feeders, fruit feeders, and fruit-bearing trees which keeps a steady stream of hummingbirds, tanagers, and many other species within sight of the lodge--you can do a great deal of birding from the comfort of your room. Since the lodge is nestled within the nature reserve, you can begin birding as early as you wish--we'll have coffee ready!
Lodge Features:
- Double and triple rooms available
- Most rooms have views
- Glass windows to keep out insects
- Private bathrooms with hot running water and flushing toilet
- Electricity in rooms
- Comfortable outdoor seating areas
- Healthy, delicious meals featuring fresh and local ingredients
- Bar with beer, cocktails, and soft drinks

Our guests says
San Jorge de Tandayapa is fabulous, San Jorge de Milpe is Magical, San Jorge de Quito is lovely.
Birdwatching in the Magic Birding Circuit was EXCELLENT, very thought, many good news of many good birds.
Wonderful guidance by George, the owner. Food was great!, accomodations were delightful, very comfortable, in beautiful settings, with birds outside the windows
Can´t ask for more.
We could have used more free time in Quito , Tandayapa and in Milpe, but I wouldn´t have missed a thing.
Maybe Connecticut Audubon could schedule more time or maybe we could come back for a longer stay.
