The San Jorge Botanical Reserve is the only native reserve located near Quito. It is located twenty minutes from the capital city, at km 4, on the old road to Nono in the northeast Pichincha foothills. It is comprised of 80 hectares, wherein native vegetation belonging to the high land tropical rain forest is found at 3000 - 3500 mts. o.s.l. (over sea level) and 9,850 - 11,450 ft., o.s.l. The Reserve contains approximately 250 native plants, 85 species of birds, and a number of marsupials, rodents and mammals. There are 15 natural running waterfalls located on the reserve.
Perched high on the Pichincha mountain foothills over looking Quito, the Hosteria has a beautiful vantage point for many of the local mountains. From the Hosteria 13 of Ecuador's highest mountains and volcanoes can be observed: Ruco Pichincha, Fuya, Pululahua, Sincholagua, Mojanda, Cajas, Cayambe, Cerro Puntas, Filo Corrales, Rumiñahui, Pasochoa, Ilaló, and Antizana.
There are three internal roads and numerous trails that have been constructed for eco-education and eco-adventure tours. The trails range from Grade A (extreme difficulty) to Grade D (soft and safe). The trails on the reserve merge to the cities of Mindo, Tandayapa, Nono and Cala Cali by pre-Inca routes. San Jorge Botanical Reserve has been created for people to enjoy conservation of nature combined with the enjoyment and appreciation of native Ecuadorian tradition.
* Pool, sauna, turkish bath, and hydro-massage pool have just recently been renovated (updated on 14 July 2005).
